Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise at the age of a small child. She was a night nurse so that she could give her aunt the time she required in the day for the love of writing, theatre and literature. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an effective tool for social change. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of social issues and taught the importance of speaking up by using the arts. DuVernay was born with her family in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. The DuVernay's father was a witness to the civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama led her later on to write a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she obtained certificates in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing content in broadcast journalism when she was in her the college. She started working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the residence and scrutinizing the garbage of one of members of the juries. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to move into the business of public relations. DuVernay was hired for her first gig as a publicist at an unassuming production studio following her college. In 1999, she launched her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Her company launched a range of promotion and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
