Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born within Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a child. Her father was awed by the iconic civil rights demonstration on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent there to inspire her upcoming film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a student at Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles when she graduated, where she obtained degrees in English as well as African American Studies. As an undergraduate student DuVernay began to consider producing in the broadcast media. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to check the trash in the house of a member of the jury. When she was dissatisfied with journalism and the jobs she was given, DuVernay determined to make a move as a publicist. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. From this position she started her own firm of public relations that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her company launched a range of lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
